Optimal Post-extubation
pressures of High CPAP

The optimal choice of CPAP pressures post-extubation (removal of breathing tube) remains unknown, including when using high CPAP pressures.  In addition, there are virtually no data assessing post-extubation pressure levels in comparison to ventilator pressures.

In this first study of its kind, we will compare two levels of CPAP pressures – in relation to pre-extubation pressure levels. Each baby will be placed on two different CPAP levels for 1 hour at a time.

Our primary outcome is electrical diaphragmatic activity, as a surrogate for how much effort the baby is generating for normal breathing. This will help set the stage for future studies on this topic to help lower the risk of re-intubation.
