Use of NIPPV (vs. CPAP)
for Apnea of Prematurity:
A systematic review

NIPPV is often used to manage apnea of prematurity. However, there is conflicting evidence on whether this is actually an effective strategy. Furthermore, CPAP is also known to reduce apneas.

In this systematic review of the published evidence, we compared the impact of NIPPV vs CPAP on Apnea of Prematurity. We found that while the frequency of apneas was not reduced, occurrence of any apneas was lower with NIPPV based on available data.

However, we could not make firm conclusions due to the limitations of available evidence, including the impact of high CPAP on apneic events.
